Junior CSS Developer

JHC Consulting is currently supporting a regional financial services group with a series of governance and strategy assessments. While our principals focus on the analytical arguments, we require technical precision to ensure our digital memoranda and internal platforms reflect the rigor of our thinking. The Junior CSS Developer will contribute to the visual structure and layout of our written counsel, ensuring that web-based reports are legible, professional, and accessible. This is a permanent, entry level position designed for someone who understands that the presentation of information is as critical as the information itself.

The Role

In this role, you will focus on the front end styling of our digital document systems. You will work closely with our technical and editorial staff to translate complex written arguments into clean, browser-based layouts. Your day-to-day work involves writing maintainable CSS to handle typography, responsive design patterns, and the visual hierarchy of data tables within our internal platform. Since JHC rejects conventional slide decks in favor of long-form prose, your task is to ensure that fifteen-page memoranda are easy to read on screen. You will also help manage style guides that keep our output consistent across various client engagements, including the work currently underway for our financial services partner. This includes testing layouts across different screen sizes to maintain the integrity of the written word regardless of how the client chooses to view it.

What You Bring

We are looking for an individual with a strong foundation in modern CSS and HTML. As this is an entry level role, we value a clear understanding of the box model, flexbox, and grid layouts over an extensive professional history. You should have an interest in typography and white space, recognizing how subtle changes in line height or margins can improve a reader's focus. Relevant skills and background include:

• Basic proficiency in CSS3 and HTML5.
• Familiarity with responsive design principles and media queries.
• An understanding of web accessibility standards to ensure documents are readable for all users.
• Exposure to CSS preprocessors like Sass or Less, though this is not strictly required.
• The ability to write clean, semantic code that prioritizing the hierarchy of information.
• Strong written communication skills to document code and explain technical choices.
• A disciplined approach to testing and refining visual layouts.
• Comfort working independently within a fully remote structure.
